Habitat: Grassland areas close to steppe lakes and marshes

Distribution: Europe and western Asia; migrates in winter to southern Africa, India and Australasia

Diet: Breeding season – aquatic invertebrates such as crustaceans, insects and their larvae, molluscs and worms; Winter – seeds of aquatic plants, grasses and grains

Distinguishing features: Male – brown head and breast with broad white crescent over the eye; Female – brown with strong face markings
