URBANIZATION is increasingly emerging as one of the most significant drivers of global environmental change.1 The impacts of city growth are especially noticeable in India, where urban landscapes have grown at unprecedented rates over the last two decades, converting a predominantly rural population to one which is rapidly becoming dominated by city dwellers. Bengaluru, India’s third largest city with a population of over six million and a decadal growth rate of 38% between 1991-2001,2 is a case in point, providing a characteristic example of rapid expansion at the expense of natural ecosystems.
