Lakes get lucky in Bangalore

Will Bangalore’s lakes finally find a saviour? The Karnataka High Court’s directives seem to have provided a ray of light to save our shrinking water bodies and wetlands writes Aliyeh Rizvi.

Recently, the Bangalore based Environment Support Group (ESG) won a significant victory in the High Court of Karnataka regarding its PIL against the lack of effective management and maintenance of lakes and the privatisation of the same. What made the victory all the more precious was the directive issued by Chief Justice J. S. Khehar and Justice A. S. Bopanna to initiate the implementation of the Report submitted by the High Court Legal Services Committee on February 26 2011, for “Preservation of Lakes in the city of Bangalore”.
Post this positive turn of events, Bangalore now becomes the FIRST city /district of India with a comprehensive plan for the protection of its wetlands.

In the meantime, citizens took matters into their own hands. The ‘Save Our Lake' group of L & T South City and Brigade Millennium apartments formed the Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust (PNLIT), and formally registered it under the Trust Act of the Government of Karnataka.
